Project overview
This documentary project focused on the restoration and preservation of Bourn Windmill, one of the oldest surviving windmills in the United Kingdom and one of the few remaining post mills still standing today. The film explored both the historical significance of the structure and the dedication of the volunteers and restoration specialists working to ensure its survival for future generations.
project process
Produced over the course of a year, the project followed the restoration process from beginning to completion, documenting the challenges, craftsmanship, and engineering involved in preserving a nationally important heritage site. The long-term nature of the shoot allowed us to capture the gradual transformation of the windmill over time, creating a more immersive and authentic narrative that reflected the scale of the restoration effort. A key part of the documentary involved conducting interviews with long-standing volunteers who had dedicated years to maintaining and protecting the windmill. Their contributions provided personal insight into the cultural and historical importance of the site, as well as the strong connection between the windmill and the local community. Additional interviews with the restoration workers and engineers helped explain the complex structural work involved, highlighting the specialist craftsmanship required to restore a centuries-old building. Restoration efforts on the windmill included extensive structural repairs after serious decay was discovered in the supporting timbers. Visually, the documentary aimed to balance cinematic imagery with informative storytelling. Seasonal changes throughout the year added visual variety and reinforced the passage of time during the restoration process, while detailed coverage of the engineering work helped emphasise the precision and care behind the project. In post-production, interviews, observational footage, and atmospheric visuals were carefully woven together to create a narrative that celebrated both the historical importance of the windmill and the people committed to preserving it. The final film highlights my ability to manage long-form documentary storytelling, interview-led narratives, and year-round production planning, while creating content that is both visually engaging and historically meaningful.
